Meet Tzu-Teng Liu

Music has been my focus since I began studying violin and piano at the age of four.
Over the years, my interest expanded from the classical foundation of the viola to the more modern sounds of the guitar, drum, and jazz piano. While my background is deeply rooted in orchestral music, I have found myself increasingly drawn to the narrative power of film music and the expressive possibilities of jazz.
My interest in film scoring comes from a fascination with how music can shape emotional storytelling. I have always been inspired by the simplicity and emotional depth in the works of Joe Hisaishi and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
At the same time, studying composers like John Williams and Hans Zimmer has helped me understand how to handle large-scale dramatic structures.
In my own compositions, I try to find a balance between these orchestral textures and contemporary elements like jazz harmony.
Currently, I am a student in the Music Media Course at Tokyo College of Music. This program has allowed me to explore composition for animation, multimedia, and live performances.
One of my most meaningful experiences was recording an orchestral work where I served as both the composer and the conductor. This role taught me not only the technical side of recording but also how to communicate and collaborate with performers to bring a vision to life.
In recent years, my involvement in jazz as a big band pianist has also influenced my writing.
It has given me a better understanding of rhythm and the interaction between musicians.
I am particularly interested in how these improvisational elements can be integrated into the structured world of film scoring to create more dynamic narratives.
