Meet Mirela Baba
Mirela Baba was born in Novi Sad, Serbia, and grew up surrounded by music. From an early age, she learnt traditional songs with her family and began playing the piano at the age of five. She enrolled in music school, Department of Classical music and during her adolescence she competed in numerous national and international piano competitions. As a scholarship holder from the Swedish government, she continued her piano studies in the classical department at the Royal College of Music "Kungliga Musikhögskolan" in Stockholm, where she obtained a master's degree in piano and music education. She had the privilege to work with some of the most renowned and prestigious pianists in Sweden, including Andres Kilstrom, Staffan Scheja, Stefan Bojsten, Mats Widlund, Greta Eriksson and others.
After her studies, Mirela accomplished an interesting musical project in Paris. Together with her sister, she collaborated as a singer with French jazz musicians, arranging traditional Balkan music in a gypsy jazz style.
This unique repertoire led to a tour across France, blending two completely different musical cultures in a fascinating way.
A few years later, Mirela discovered her passion for composing music, which has become her primary professional activity since then. Now she produces music for various music editors. Despite her entire classical musical education, her compositions often reflect a combination of different musical traditions. Further more, Mirela made it to the top 20 this year in the Oticons Faculty International Film Music Competition, competing among 166 composers from 37 countries.
She is continually amazed by the incredible power of music and its crucial role in creating diverse ambiances.
