Participant Tales : Andres Hernandez

Updated: Jan 17, 2019

Hello there! And welcome to week 3 of our new-participant tales, where I’ll tell you all about our new participants in the GEMS Film & Visual Media Scoring Program 2019, which will be taking place between the 1st and 11th July, 2019. This week, we’ve got professional film composer, Andres Hernandez!

The City of Wine?!

So get this, Andres is from Logroño, La Rioja, Spain which happens to be, the city of wine! How cool is that?! I wish I lived in the city of wine, jeez (basically, I like wine). Don’t know if most of you have been to Madrid before, but my, my, the sangria was amazing there, so I’m sure the wine in the so-called city of wine is even better!

Andres’ Experience

Anywho, back to Andres. Andres is pretty much already a pro in the scoring-for-screen industry;

“I’ve been making music for short films, theatre, cartoon movies and live performance like video mapping since 2011. I am also an animator in cartoon 2D and 3D, but the most important thing which I’ve done is music for theatre; it includes some of my best themes - my goal now is to make music for video games”.

Video games, you say, Andres? Well, that’s perfect, because this year we will have a video-game scoring program with Garry Schyman as part of the full summer program!

As you can see, Andres has been doing this for quite a few years now, he’s composed for a short film entitled Wine, Universal Culture and Dionysus’ Secret, and has won several awards from the film contest Oenovideo, which takes place in France.

As aforementioned, Andres also composes for the theatre, and the last play he composed for was Los Cuervos no se Peinan, which premiered in 2017 at the Festival Teatrea en Otono. So clearly, Andres has had quite a lot of experience when it comes to composing for screen, so I can only imagine how great his composition this year will be!

How did you find out about the course?

So how did Andres find out about the course? Well, turns out, it was through our very own Juanjo Molina!

“3 months ago, I went to Madrid looking to improve my knowledge, and I met Juanjo Molina. He told me that in Madrid there aren’t courses specialized in film music – but he said if I want I can go to the summer course and can try it. Juanjo was the first person to speak to me about this; I said okay I’ll think about it a little bit and I saw your interview (Marias Interview) and thought that ‘that girl told me to just do it, so I’m going to do it!”

If you haven’t checked them out yet, check out last year’s interviews and past students’ music here! Videos and Music. Go watch! Go listen!

So what is Andres looking forward to in the course?

“I’ve always been learning by myself. When someone teaches me something, I am always grateful because when people give you personal advice, it’s always better. For orchestral music, every piece of knowledge will be like gold for me – like water in the desert. I’m always looking for things, now with the internet, you’ve got everything."

"I’m very interested in game scoring though, because I used to be an avid gamer as a kid, but then I stopped playing because life got in the way, but now I’d like to apply that information to my experience with theatre and live performance experience, for example, to make something with that”.

Wise words from Andres, I think we all know how difficult it is to stay motivated and keep going when you’re learning stuff on your own, sometimes. But as he said, having someone giving you their personal advice (particularly when they’re mentoring your music), it’s always better.

This is what our tutors will be doing in the program! They’ll be able to point out things in your music which perhaps you haven’t noticed yourself, while also offering you their years of experience at hand.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up to find out how to really boost your music and make it the best it can be! Not to mention, to get to record with an actual 50-piece live orchestra.

Early bird ends in just a few days, get it here! Just 6 places left! Tickets here

See you next week, guys!
